Systems Thinking

I enjoyed reading How to Start Using Systems Thinking Today, along with the BoK and other guidance via the links provided in the blog post.

In my teaching of Risk Management, I spend quite some time on Systems Thinking as it provides another valuable way of mapping and understanding a project’s environment and the risks that could occur from the relationships and interactions involved in complex projects.

Systems Thinking and in particular Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) provide a project professional with an ability to consider problems from the perspective of the people involved and the relationships and interactions between them, rather than taking a linear, deterministic view. It was also one of the 11 key skills set out in APM’s guide to Developing Project Data Analytics Skills.

Projects are rarely simple and linear, tools to articulate and describe them can be invaluable.
