Who is responsible for this?
We are sure you will have heard that said. Probably in a strong tone or at a loud volume! But when considering risk, or the consequences of risk, who is responsible? Without getting into any detail whatsoever about what a risk is or the finer technical points of how risk should be identified, assessed and managed, there is one aspect of risk management that remains fundamental. The best thing you can possibly do in risk management is DO SOMETHING.
Yes you!
Take responsibility. I have come across many situations, projects and organisations where team members believe that managing risk is somebody else’s job. Statements such as “Oh, the Risk Manager does that!” or “I’m just an engineer, I don’t get involved in risk” are common and unfortunately represent a lack of awareness or an attitude that should not be allowed to prevail.
So, my advice is to DO SOMETHING. Take some action today to better understand, assess and manage your risk exposure and you will have taken a great first step to being better at risk management.
It is a commonly held principle that risks should be allocated to the party best able to manage them. Whatever your role, whatever work you are producing, it is likely that you will be best placed to understand and manage the risk related to that work. Someone in your team or project or organisation may have the title of risk manager, but you can help them in that task. Today.
Who is responsible for this? You are!
